Abstract : This research is concerned with investigating the possibility of optimizing Galerkin approximate solutions for boundary layer flow problems. It is shown that the accuracy of Galerkin velocity profiles is strongly dependent on the functions used in the approximate solution. In fact, the accuracy appears to depend continuously on the shapes of the approximating functions. Thus a solution optimization technique based on minimizing the upper error bound may be possible. A digital computer program for generating weighted-residual boundary layer solutions has been developed.
