Abstract : The function of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as both an electrophilic and nucleophilic reagent has been well established. However, its reactions with substrates which are similarly biphilic have attracted little comment, even though they are of potential mechanistic and preparative interest. Discussed are the mechanisms involved in the heating of alpha-chloro-p-nitrobenzaldoxime in DMSO. (Author)
