Abstract : The report covers the results obtained on a study program which is to analytically and experimentally delineate the factors contributing to leakage past surfaces in sliding contact. An analytical method for predicting oil consumption (leakage) was developed based on data obtained from the literature. The results obtained from this analysis are presented along with a comparison to leakage data calculated using hydrodynamic lubrication theory. The reciprocating seal test fixture was designed and its features as well as general layout are presented. (Author)
