Abstract : The purpose of the paper is to adapt dynamic programming to the problem of allocating tolerances. The scope of the problem is limited to piece parts which mate together to form the total assembly. The total tolerance allotted to the assembly will be allocated to the piece parts as a function of scrap cost. When several different manufacturing processes are available to produce a particular part or dimension, the technique will specify the process which will minimize total cost. A computer program has been developed which will enable the technique to be automated. An example will be worked out concurrently with the explanation of the problem. (Author)
