Abstract : The paper discusses past, present, and future applications of the spectrometric oil analysis technique to Department of Defense equipment. Brief descriptions of the operation of atomic emission and atomic absorption spectrometers are given in conjunction with possible sources of error. A statistical technique is presented for analyzing the results from the different laboratories in the Army's Spectrometric Oil Analysis Program. Using this technique, data from Ft. Rucker, ARADMAC, and Okinawa is analyzed as to reliability, correlation, and trends. (Author)
