Abstract : A replacement time for a system composed of n independently failing subsystems can be found such that it minimizes the cost of failures in service if: (1) one or more subsystems possess increasing failure rates at specific times in their lives and continue to do so until failure or removal from service, and (2) there is a cost associated with placing the system in service and a cost associated with each system failure. The paper derives the stated replacement time when the above conditions are true. Initially, a general model description is given which is followed by the stated derivation. It will be noted that the final derivation of the optimum system replacement time has no restriction concerning the age of the subsystems. An example problem follows the derivations to illustrate the calculations, and a computer program is given to solve the simple problems which follow the above restrictions. (Author)
