Abstract : A generalized tracking task system was designed, constructed, and demonstrated by the writer. The unit allows use of hand and/or foot controls to manipulate a stylus along a moving linear target. The target is a track painted on a rotating disk. A small section at the top of the disk may be observed by the subject. Provisions were made to change task complexity by varying the amount of track area visible by the subject and by varying the rate of track speed. Variations of control/display ratio, control actuation forces, and positions of controls are also possible. A trail study was conducted on ninety random, male subjects for three levels of task complexity and three levels of control/display ratio to demonstrate the machine's effectiveness for a typical tracking task experiment. Statistical analysis of the data and subjective observations of the machine's performance showed that the unit performed satisfactorily during the small study and yielded consistent measurements of the subjects' tracking ability.
