Abstract : Reflections of molecular beams of air, N2, and Ar were measured on various synthetic coatings, nickel sheet and glass. A smooth silver layer was used for a reference surface. It was possible to measure the scattering distribution as a function of the incident angle on the sample surface and on the reference surface. The incomplete momentum transfer of gas particles colliding with the surface results in a decrease of frictional resistance, and must manifest itself in an increased forward scattering. Such a forward scattering was actually observed on the synthetic coatings. (Author)
