Abstract : It is demonstrated by investigating the composition of the martensite and carbides in high alloy chrome vanadium steels that the wear resistance of all tool steels consisting of martensite and carbides depends basically on the degree of alloying of the martensite. An optimal composition for a wear resistant steel can be found only by using the curve of wear as a function of quantity of the alloying element. (Author)
