Abstract : The analytic signal is defined as the complex function conveying all information contained in a real bandlimited function which can be sampled at the lowest possible rate. After a brief background discussion of Hilbert and z transforms, it is shown that quadrature sampling yields approximate samples of the analytic signal. Techniques for improving the approximation for broadband signals are presented and evaluated, as well as a technique for removing all approximations which is applicable to low pass, broadband, and narrowband signals. Application and implementation techniques are given in the appendix. (Author)
