Abstract : One- and three-dimensional models were constructed of the earth's thermosphere from 120-500 km in altitude. A significant advancement over previous work was accomplished by the use of novel mathematical methods to treat time variability, winds and the momentum equation, which are often approximated or neglected in such studies. Heating and cooling studies were performed using representative heating deposition profiles for EUV and geomagnetic heating. These studies elucidate reaction times and intensities as functions of heat deposition parameters. The one-dimensional model results have been compared with those of Mahoney, Thomas, and Thomas-Ching. In addition to the modeling studies, various advanced studies were conducted of heat deposition and energy transport, in order to provide a sound physical basis for future improvements in the existing models.
