Abstract : The Appendix to IDA Study S-382 describes some principal data sources which the DoD may exploit to meet military needs for environmental data in the period 1975-1980. The purpose of this Appendix is to contribute to estimations of future DoD environmental support services computer requirements. The currently conventional sources of meteorological data are described. It is concluded that while military exploitation of these conventional sources may continue in the future, its dependence on the cooperation of foreign nations is a sensitive vulnerability. As a chief source of new data, the potential of satellite systems and of new ocean data collection systems is examined. A hypothetical exemplar satellite system is envisioned and compared to satellites programmed by NASA and NOAA. A hypothetical exemplar ocean data collection platform is also envisioned and compared to present and planned ocean data collection systems. (Author)
