Abstract : The measurement of stress pulses from two 1000-lb high explosive shots in tuff at the Nevada Test Site has provided stress-time waveforms for comparison with applicable theory. Ytterbium piezoresistant gages were used to measure radial stress in the range of 1 to 14 kbar. The experiments were located near the HLOS sites of Hudson Moon and Diana Mist. Ytterbium gages show excellent promise as a field device to measure dynamic stress pulses in the range of a fraction to tens of kilobars. The loading history and peak stress are satisfactorily obtained from gage records by using currently available calibration data; however, calibration data for conversion of unloading records are questionable.
