Abstract : An experimental study on swirling flows in cylindrical ducts has been undertaken with and without an axial heat source, and a nearly adiabatic outer wall. The annulus radius ratio is 3.2 and a Reynolds number range is reported. Data are presented for velocity, angular momentum, and flux of total angular momentum along the tube. The friction and heat transfer coefficients are compared to linear flows. An optimum angle of injection and mass flux seems to exist for the least frictional losses and maximum heat transfer though the decay of swirl is measured for that flow.
