Abstract : Various aspects of immunological research and immunological research organizations are discussed on the basis of visits to a number of research institutions in Europe. (1) The Max Planck Institut fur Immunbiologie in Freiburg, where a many-sided approach has led to detailed understanding of the structure of enteric microorganisms on the one hand, and to unexpected advances in unrelated fields of biology and medicine, on the other. (2) The new Hoffmann-la Roche Institute for Immunology at Basel, where the individual scientist and his personal interests are given priority, although internal and external cooperation are encouraged. (3) The World Health Organization, endeavoring to make available to the developing countries, the talents of the best immunologists and, through them, to detect and foster talent for sound practical immunology in outlying places. The more technical part of the report is devoted to a summary of several accomplishments of Prof. Estphal's group in Freiburg: (1) The significance of the lysophospholipids in cell interactions. (2) The lipopolysaccharide structure of enteric bacteria. (3) Oral immunization. (4) Lymphocyte proliferation in the omentum. (5) Plans for research on cholera. (Author)
