Abstract : The reaction of SiH2Cl2 with NaC2B4H7 at 0C in tetrahydrofuran yields mu, mu'-SiH2(C2B4H7)2, a novel bis(dicarbahexaboranyl) silane in which silicon is linked to two C2B4H7 cages via 3-center, 2-electron bonds. The compound and its rearrangement product have been structurally characterized from boron-II nmr, proton nmr, infrared, and mass spectra. Of the two possible isomers based on sp3 hybrid orbitals on silicon, that of C2 symmetry appears dominant, but the proton nmr spectrum indicates the possible presence of the alternative C(s) isomer as a minor product. At 100C the compound rearranges to 4,4'-SiH2(C2B4H7)2 and at 150C the latter species decomposes to give closo-C3B5H7, 4-SiH3C2B4H7, C2B4H8, and solids. (Author)
