Abstract : The first thermomechanical spectra of two new carborane-siloxane polymers containing 5-boron carborane cages in the backbone are reported and discussed. The polymers are: the homopolymer, HO-(Si(CH3)2-CB5H5C-Si(CH3)2-O)(n)H and the random copolymer of the above with twenty mole percent of its 10-boron meta carborane analogue: -(Si(CH3)2-CB10H10C-Si(CH3)2-O)(n). The mechanical spectra (about 1 cps) were determined from -180C to +625C to -180C via the semimicro thermomechanical technique of torsional braid analysis. The T(g)'s indicate an unusually high degree of chain flexibility for a polymer with such bulky groups in its backbone. Their thermal stability in both air and nitrogen were studied. (Author)
