Abstract : The study examines the aggregate profit rates of various samples of aerospace defense contractors within the particular operating environment of the defense and space systems market. To give perspective to this particular operating environment, a parallel study of the public utility industry and its operating environment is also included. The analysis includes a detailed examination of return indices for both industries and a comprehensive description of the particular industry operating environments. The elements of the operating environments studies are capital investment, research and development, demand, competition, and regulation and contracts.
