Abstract : The magnitude and origin of residual stresses after uniaxial plastic deformation in Armco iron and 1010 steel have been studied by X-ray diffraction techniques. It was found that both pseudo-macrostresses and microstresses exist. A qualitative theory, due to Weidemann et al for the oscillations in d vs sin squared psi caused by microstresses (and that lead to anomalous values of residual stress) has been placed on a quantitative basis and tested. A procedure has been developed for obtaining the true macrostress in the presence of such oscillations. (Author)
