Abstract : A gas chromatographic technique was developed and applied to analysis of the concentration of dibutyl phthalate as a function of grain size in WC-846 ball powder. Concentrations varying from 4.0 to 7.0 percent by weight dibutyl phthalate were found in ball powder samples varying in size from 40/45 mesh to 25/30 mesh. Use of a gas chromatograph equipped with both flame ionization and thermal conductivity detectors provided two analyses per sample injection. A sample preparation procedure involving digestion of the ball powder with acetone and precipitation of the nitrocellulose by addition of carbon tetrachloride and petroleum ether eliminated the need for the more troublesome extraction procedures generally used in plasticizer isolation from propellant samples. No interference was found from other species present in the propellant extract. (Author)
