Abstract : The objective of this exploratory development program is to obtain a new electrooptic material that can be grown relatively easily, is of optical quality, resists damage to high intensity laser radiation, possesses a low half-wave voltage, and is suitable for Q-switching of visible and near infrared radiation at low repetition rates. Towards this objective numerous heretofore unknown complex oxide compounds were prepared in polycrystalline form and characterized. Preliminary x-ray diffraction studies were conducted, and several new tungsten bronze structures were obtained from these new products. The compounds KBa5Nb9ZrO30 and Ba2LaLiNaLi2Nb10O30 were observed to exhibit the tetragonal tungsten bronze structure with a = 12.625; 12.41 and c = 4.010, 3.92A, respectively. Barium strontium niobate, in which the zirconium cation was isomorphously substituted for a portion of the niobium cation, was also prepared. (Author)
