Abstract : A numerical, baroclinically driven, nonlinear, hydromagnetic dynamo model, which resembles Gilman's (1969) model, is formulated and applied to the sun. According to the baroclinic hypothesis, a stably stratified, but baroclinically unstable region is imbedded inside the convection zone. Because it is impossible at present, to verify this rather adhoc hypothesis observationally, only the plausibility of a baroclinic dynamo model for the sun is investigated. More specifically, is it capable of simulating and maintaining the solar differential rotation and/or large scale solar magnetic fields. The model incorporates properties of fluid dynamos and of rotating geophysical fluids.
