Abstract : A review of the most recent developments in and applications of the direct simulation Monte Carlo method for the numerical solution of problems in rarefied gas dynamics. A new programming system has been devised for multi-dimensional flows which allows a single program to deal with flows of arbitrary geometry. One such program has been developed for two-dimensional or axially symmetric flows and another for three dimensional flows. The possible application of these programs to continuum flows is examined. Other developments include a program for the study of the internal structure of shock waves in a dissociating gas and the production of additional sequences of a color movie to illustrate rarefied gas flows on a molecular scale.
