Abstract : The current study with chloroquine (CQ) and diformyl diaminodiphenysulfone (DFD) was carried out in Dutch-belted rabbits at levels up to six times the intended human dose. The results revealed neither anorexia nor any neonatal or fetotoxic manifestations. Pair-fed controls were included in this series. No significant anorexia, adverse symptomatology, morbidity or increased abortion tendency were found in the CQ- or DFD-treated rabbits. The earlier observations in the rabbits were not confirmed in this series in part due to possible pre-existent etiopathic latent disease in the earlier group of rabbits. The current study, carried out in essentially disease free animals, suggests that the anorexigenic responses in the earlier study and the consequent restricted food intake, and not the ingestion of CQ and DFD, accounted for the earlier adverse findings.
