Abstract : This report summarizes work performed under the contract from September 1971 through March 1972, the first half of a one-year effort to design, fabricate, and test an experimental 10.6 micrometer laser communication system. The system consists of a transmitting terminal and a receiving terminal which provides a simplex 5 Mbit/sec data channel over a five-mile terrestrial path with an error rate of 0.000.01 in all but the most severe weather conditions. The system uses intracavity electro-optic modulation with a frequency shift keying format and optical FM heterodyne detection using a mercury-cadmiu,-telluride (HgCdTe) detector operating at 77K. The details of the system design and predicted performance in rain and fog are given. (Author)
