Abstract : Performance capabilities of an improved ruby laser with Q-switched double-pulsed output as applied to holographic interferometry were investigated. The basic criteria leading to mode selection and the mode selection technique are described. A ruby laser with a pulse duration in the order of 20 nanoseconds and coherence length of one meter was applied to vibration and shock studies of a number of mechanical structures including thin and thick plates, a loudspeaker, a transducer housing, and a long cylindrical rod.
