Abstract : Quantitative spectra of atmospheric ice Ih are presented for 3.4 to 15 micrometers, and absorptivity coefficients for ice and liquid water at 8 to 14 micrometers are presented and compared. A modified equation modeling contributions of water in the vapor, liquid, and ice Ih phases to total atmospheric emission is presented. In the infrared 'continuum' at 8 to 14 micrometers, traces of either ice Ih or liquid water aerosol can affect radiance measurements more strongly than large concentrations of the vapor. Whereas water vapor has been studied extensively as a source of infrared emission in the atmosphere, liquid water and ice contributions have been appreciated only recently. (Author)
