Abstract : Steels 20, 30, 45, and U-8 in the annealed and hardened states were used in a study of the dependence between wear during dry friction and the microhardness of the wearing surfaces. Determinations were made of the work of the frictional force expended in the increase of internal energy of the rubbing materials. Microhardness is shown to have different values at different sites on the friction surface due to the localization of the actual areas of contact. The maximum value of microhardness is attained at fracture sites. (Author)
