Abstract : Megawatt pulses from an actively mode locked CO2 TEA laser which were focussed in air at atmospheric pressure produced a sequence of breakdown points whose positions moved towards the laser during the first half of the pulse train and then regressed towards the focus. The associated shock waves were made luminescent by later laser pulses so that their evolution could be studied to reveal information about the dynamical processes inside the breakdown region.
