Abstract : Several reliability approximations for complex coherent systems with highly reliable components are reviewed and the need for some relatively simple approximations which would be useful in a preliminary reliability analysis of the same type of system is presented. Some approximations based on minimal paths, minimal cuts, most reliable minimal paths, and least reliable minimal cuts are investigated in terms of simplicity and accuracy. The possible applications of the approximations are illustrated through the use of examples. (Author)
