Abstract : A computer program for the rapid reduction of the Vela satellite x-ray data has been developed for use at the Air Force Global Weather Central computer facility of the Air Weather Service. The physical reasoning and mathematical analysis underlying this program are presented. Sufficient detail is included to allow an understanding of the source program listing. As originally set up, this program delivers a two-temperature bremsstrahlung equation approximation to the solar x-ray flux for each 32 seconds of data. From this approximation, sets of values of 0.5-3A flux and 1-8A flux are stored, and periodically searched to detect possible x-ray flares. For each flare which is detected, parameters such as start time, maximum time, and total energy are stored for recall on demand. (Author)
