Abstract : Program environments suitable for the investigation of a large number of different grid systems and algorithms relevant for the solution of large scale meteorological circulation problems are presented. One of them employs a mixed grid system to solve the barotropic problem. Inconsistencies arising from linear interpolation between the grids followed by numerical differentiation are examined. Also, a spherical grid system with flexibility of definition on the globe is described and the relationship necessary for its use in a finite differencing scheme are developed. Additionally, a program is presented which is useful for calculating the parameters needed for the numerical evaluation of arbitrary differential operators using information from arbitrarily selected grid points.
