Abstract : An atomic oxygen absorption cell system has been developed for application in the measurement of absorption cross sections of atomic oxygen at wavelengths shorter than 910 A (the first ionization threshold). The system is based on vacuum ultraviolet photodissociation of oxygen molecules via absorption of light in the Schumann-Runge continuum (1300 A to 1760 A). The necessary dissociative vacuum ultraviolet flux is supplied from a cylindrical, xenon, plasma source which surrounds a sapphire walled absorption cell. The pressure, annular thickness and length of the xenon plasma is variable. Analysis indicates that an oxygen atom concentration in excess of 90% can be achieved under steady operating conditions. The cell is constructed to be compatible with McPherson vacuum monochromators. (Author)
