Abstract : Based on X-ray diffraction data for the Fe-C system the viscosity values for these melts were calculated. Ternary alloys Fe-C-Ni (with 5 percent Ni) and Fe-C-W (with 5 percent W), i.e. Fe-C-alloys with additions which behave directly opposite to them during the carbide-formation process, were also investigated. The addition of 1.5-2.0 percent C does not change the viscosity. The addition of 5 percent W results in the formation of stable W carbides and in a change in the degree of superheating of the alloy above the liquids temperature. In the case of Fe-C-5 percent Ni, increased C activity in the presence of Ni is noted. The 2nd characteristic of this system is the strong temperature dependence of the viscosity. The results indicate a change in the short-range order in the Fe-C melts in the presence of both the carbide-forming and graphite-forming elements. (Author)
