Abstract : The size and shape of the female head and mouth-parts of Chrysops vittatus Wiedemann, Hybomitra lasiophthalma Macquart and Tabanus lineola Fabricius are illustrated and compared quantitatively. The functions of the mouthparts are discussed. It is suggested that the short, broad proboscis of tabanines, in contract to that of chrysopines, may restrict them to feeding on vertebrates with short or sparse hair and on flowers with shallow nectaries.
