Abstract : The effect of grain boundaries on an anomalous change in heat capacity and the coefficient of volume expansion beta near the melting point was studied by measuring the temperature dependence of beta of single crystals and polycrystalline samples of naphthalene. The procedure for the measurement of beta is described. The existence and difference between anomalies of the specimens are explained by the fact that before melting of the entire crystal melting of some matter in a thin layer near the intergrain boundaries begins.
