Abstract : The propagation of a weak nearly plane shock wave through a slightly inhomogeneous medium was studied. The equations for a finite strength shock wave are used as a starting point in order that the cumulative effect of second order terms will not be lost. The motivation for the study was the experimental observation that atmospheric turbulence can alternately focus and defocus weak waves from an aircraft. A more detailed understanding of the influence of atmospheric turbulence on this problem was sought. The basic equations are derived, and some preliminary results are obtained. (Author)
