Abstract : The article discusses a method of obtaining a solution to a non-conservative mechanics problem. When the method is applied to projectile penetration it yields the drag on the projectile as a function of depth, velocitym material properties and the imposed displacement boundary conditions for the surface of half space penetrated. The process probably can be assumed to be adiabatic since the event occurs so quickly. The deceleration predicted can be compared with those measured in both field and laboratory tests. The boundary motions must be those that have been observed in the field and laboratory studies.
