Abstract : The report descusses the research on heavy ion physics. Reaction mechanisms studies, searches for new unstable residual nuclei, and transfer reaction experiments have been undertaken to characterize the collisions of heavy ions interms of bombarding energy, structure of the collision partners, and processes leading to new and unusual isotopes. There is some evidence that fission-like processes occur even in relatively light, but highly-excited nuclear systems. The results of heavy ion experiments test models for compound nuclei at high excitation and reactions mechanisms yielding products far from the valley of stability. Progress is reported on the construction of a quadrupole spectrometer which will be used for heavy ion research and on the feasibility of a very heavy, very highly-ionized positive-ion source. The investigation includes precise Q-value and threshold measurements, isobaric analogue state studies, and nucleon transfer studies for light projectiles. (Author)
