Abstract : The opening of the Red Sea has been caused by a two-stage clockwise rotation of Africa from Arabia. A separation rotation of the Horn of Africa is believed to have contributed to the opening of the Gulf of Aden. If Sinai is treated as a separate block, the rotation of Africa leads to the southerly displacement of this block with respect to Arabia; there is ample geological evidence for this. Negative gravity anomalies in the Gulf of Aqaba support the idea of a shear. (Author)
