Abstract : The dimensional analysis and the empirical correlation achieved in developing a dimensionally correct formula for approximating the towing resistance for either a rigid or a pneumatic-tired wheel are presented. A method, called the moving chord concept, for handling the geometry of the complex phenomenon relating to the configuration of a pneumatic tire in soft soil (based on experimental evidence) is presented. The formula that is developed satisfies quite effectively a wide range of tire sizes, wheel loads, and tire deflections in two extremes of soil type, namely cohesionless dry Yuma desert sand and highly plastic Louisiana buckshot clay.
