Abstract : The determination of fracture toughness K1c with specimens of medium size requires the investigation of the onset of the crack growth in the center of the specimens. For the titanium alloy TiA16V4 the crack growth was determined by the load-displacement curve according to the method of repeated loading and unloading, by the potential method, and by the appearance of the fracture surfaces. With these methods it was proved that the onset of crack growth starts at a stress intensity factor 30% less than the K1c value, which was determined according to the secant method of the ASTM recommendation.
