Abstract : A hardware monitor was used to determine the validity of a simulation and to investigate the response characteristics of The Rand Corporation's Video Graphics System (VGS). This interactive graphics system is implemented on an IBM 1800, which--with associated analog equipment--services a number of interactive terminals. User programs are run on service machines with which the 1800 communicates. Because the 1800 is totally application-programmed, the authors found it necessary to use a hardware monitor. They used a prototype monitor based on a general-purpose minicomputer. The monitor's design allowed logical combinations of probes to be specified on-line through a teletype terminal.
