Abstract : The purpose of the investigation was to determine whether the constituents of corneal transplants persisted after grafting, or whether they were replaced by the host's tissue. The cells of donor corneas were labeled with long-lived isotopically tagged physiological pre-cursors of desoxyribose nucleic acid and the collagenous part of the donor tissue was labeled with C14-glycine. In addition, various factors affecting the cornea, leading to the necessity for corneal transplants and/or to conditions rendering the transplantation difficult or impossible were studied. Cellular components (keratocytes and endothelium) were studied when transplanted between unrelated rabbits. The findings have an important bearing on the problem of immunologically caused rejection phenomena. (Author)
