Abstract : A survey of the principal methods used to obtain the electromagnetic and acoustic scattered fields at high frequencies is presented. After a discussion of the Watson transformation, geometrical and physical optics are applied to a variety of scatterers with different shapes and made of different materials. Further refinements of these methods, such as the geometrical theory of diffraction and the theory of fringe waves, are described and compared with each other. A special section is devoted to the scattering by inhomogeneous madia. The accuracy of the methods is discussed, and comparisons are made with numerical and experimental data. Other results which are often useful in high-frequency scattering are given in the appendixes. (Author)
