Abstract : No broad-spectrum detection and identification system for air born chemical substances exists which begins to approach the performance of the vertebrate nose with respect to discriminability, sensitivity, dynamic range, and variety of substances detectable. The authors report here the results of investigations the ultimate aims of which are to discover the physical nature of the detection process and the encoding system prevailing in the peripheral nervous system. Also reported is an ancillary study on encoding related to speech pattern recognition. It is briefly described because of its relevance to neural coding studies.
