Abstract : The problem investigated in the paper is that of estimating, in a Bayesian framework, the difference between the means of two normal distributions under the restriction that the total sample size be fixed beforehand. Two-stage procedures for doing this are examined. In terms of the relevant prior parameters, the optimal second stage allocation is given and formulae are presented for determining the optimal first stage sample size. Some numerical illustrations are given along with a comparison of the two-stage and one-stage procedures. (Author)
