Abstract : Collisional momentum transfer cross sections and their relation to the Avco momentum coupling experiment are discussed. Cross sections that account for electron shell interpenetration predict total mass pickup on a collisional basis, but the short scale lengths for density jumps are not fully explained. The previously reported effect of a magnetic field on the coupling was found to be due to the field's influence on the initial spreading of the streaming Al plasma, which changed the amount of intercepted background air. Measurements of the plasma ultraviolet radiation have established this mechanism as a major source of energy loss. Energy balance calculations are in agreement with the measured electron temperature. Increases in initial plasma velocity and decreases in initial mass and background density have moved the experimental parameters to the borderline of the collisional regime. Directions for further improvement are discussed. (Author)
