Abstract : The paper describes research leading to the development of a formal model of human pattern perception. This work combines approaches from research in automatic pattern recognition, physiology and form perception. In particular, studies exploring factors related to the use of pattern redundancy and the subsequent formation of statistically defined classes (schematic concept formation) are described. A conceptual framework, which is based primarily on the use of pattern redundancy, grammatical relationships between pattern components, and Hubel and Wiesel's feature detectors, is presented. Finally, a number of military applications determined from this research program are described. (Author)
