Abstract : The study of the information content of hydrologic data requires an understanding of both the physics of the hydrologic system and the data analysis methods available. As man increasingly manipulates his environment for his own advantage and exerts more control over water resources, it becomes more and more important to scrutinize hydrologic data more intensely. The paper points out how the increased sophistication of digital computers makes it possible to use the more advanced tools of data analysis that were developed by mathematicians many years ago. The potential scope of hydrologic data analysis is outlined, and emphasis is placed in the later sections on the use of the coherence function. (Author)
